Koreans lead Pakistan 2-0

KARACHI: Pakistan’s tennis ace Aisam-ul-Haq crashed in a five-setter against South Korea’s Yong-Kyu Lim as the hosts took a 2-0 lead on the opening day of their Davis Cup Asia Oceania Zone Group II second round ties in Gimcheon on Friday.
Aisam, who fell at the first hurdle at Wimbledon, came back twice in the marathon match but finally ran out of steam in the last set. Lim won 6-2 5-7 6-4 3-6 6-3.
Aisam’s partner Aqeel Khan suffered a straight sets defeat in the other singles match. Kyu-Tae Im was a comfortable 6-2 6-4 6-2 winner against Aqeel.
Pakistan now face an uphill task as they will have to win Saturday’s (today’s) doubles match and then the two reverse singles on Sunday to progress to the next stage of the tournament.
The Pakistan reached the second round after beating Hong Kong 3-2 while Korea demolished Syria 4-1 in their first round encounter.
In their last meeting against Korea at home in 2003, Pakistan won the encounter with excellent performances from the Aisam-Aqeel duo.
Friday’s results:
Korea 2, Pakistan 0
Kyu-Tae Im beat Aqeel Khan 6-2 6-4 6-2
Yong-Kyu Lim beat Aisamul-Haq Qureshi 6-2 5-7 6-4 3-6 6-3
